Historic and traditional Lakeland building services for Cumbria, the Lake District and the North West

Photo of a historic building projectWhile we are happy to take on whole range of new and modern building projects, we have developed a specialism in traditional and historic building services.

Our traditional Lakeland and Cumbrian building portfolio includes residential renovations, sympathetic extensions, and barn conversions. We also have strong experience of work on historic and traditional properties that need renovating for the lettings and holiday rental market.

Our skilled tradesmen deliver the highest quality of workmanship, and we can co-ordinate the full range of trades required for the site - from general builders to plumbers, electricians to plasterers, stone masons to joiners, decorators to carpenters. All have good experience of traditional materials and techniques and the results speak for themselves.

We always aim to exceed expectations, complete on time, and work to your budget. We are proud to be members of the Federation of Master builders, and we’re committed to the highest standards of customer service and workmanship in the industry. We are also very proud to have received awards for some of our historic and traditional building work from the FMB.

We can help you with the planning process, we will work closely with other specialists on site, and you can expect us to produce work that enhances the original building but delivers on modern comforts and standards of living.

Testimonials

  • Swindale

Troughton's is a family firm and after working on our property throughout 2015 and 2016, we feel honoured to have been part of this family during the renovation / conversion of our property. During 2015 when the farmhouse was being renovated we were still living in Lincoln. Despite the distance, Jim and Paul Troughton kept us regularly informed on progress, on decisions to be taken and sent us regular photographs. Jim not only acted as a builder but full project manager and his son Paul was instrumental in design choices ensuring a beautiful finished product. Without even asking for many of the features we now have, Jim sourced traditional stone flags for our fire places and some floored areas, plus traditional looking timbers and slates for window trusses and sills. Jim knows exactly how our old farmhouse and barn conversion should look. His own staff have a wide range of skills and where necessary he used skilled sub-contractors. The quality of everyone's work has been faultless and I cannot recommend them highly enough. Every member of staff working on our property has been courteous, polite and friendly at all times. The Troughton Home Improvements team have produced a beautiful home for us. It is truly our dream house.
