Low Fold

Low Fold, Troutbeck, Lake District: a traditional building renovation project

The brief:

To renovate a traditional Lake District building, which was last updated in the 1960s, and to convert the attached granary building into a holiday home suitable for the luxury market.

Team on site:

This project was fully project and site managed by our team and all of our trades were co ordinated over a three year period to transform the site into a holiday home that made the most of the stunning views and surrounding landscape. Trades included general builders, plasterers, plumbers, electricians, stone masons and joiners.

Work carried out:

With traditional buildings it is vital to retain as many original character and period features as possible. We diligently stripped back cosmetic additions from the last 50 years and uncovered oak panelling and original slate and oak flooring, as well exposing beams, returning interior doors to their former glory, and offering much need tlc to the amazing stonework that is so characteristic of this area.

We then refurbished the whole property, introducing a carefully planned balance between old and new. This phase included underfloor heating, a full kitchen fit, new bathroom suites, and interior design for the lounge.

The whole is now an easily maintained luxury holiday home with views to die for.

Troughton's is a family firm and after working on our property throughout 2015 and 2016, we feel honoured to have been part of this family during the renovation / conversion of our property. During 2015 when the farmhouse was being renovated we were still living in Lincoln. Despite the distance, Jim and Paul Troughton kept us regularly informed on progress, on decisions to be taken and sent us regular photographs. Jim not only acted as a builder but full project manager and his son Paul was instrumental in design choices ensuring a beautiful finished product. Without even asking for many of the features we now have, Jim sourced traditional stone flags for our fire places and some floored areas, plus traditional looking timbers and slates for window trusses and sills. Jim knows exactly how our old farmhouse and barn conversion should look. His own staff have a wide range of skills and where necessary he used skilled sub-contractors. The quality of everyone's work has been faultless and I cannot recommend them highly enough. Every member of staff working on our property has been courteous, polite and friendly at all times. The Troughton Home Improvements team have produced a beautiful home for us. It is truly our dream house.
